Kreeng Jai (เกรงใจ): the reluctance to impose

Kreeng jai (เกรงใจ) is the deep reluctance to impose on another person. Not politeness, something deeper. Literally it means “to fear the heart.” Kreeng, borrowed from Old Khmer, meant timid, wary. In Thai the fear is of troubling someone.
