Tà-wan-òok (ตะวันออก 📣) means east.
ORIGIN: Old Thai, taa wan, “eye of the day.”
PARTS: taa = eye, wan = day, òok = comes out.
LITERALLY: where the day’s eye comes out.
Malay calls the sun matahari, eye of the day, though the languages aren’t from the same family.
