Nâak (นาค 📣), the naga, is a divine serpent, a dragon-like water spirit. Guardian of rivers, gatekeeper of temples. In Isan tradition their city lies beneath the Mekong, and they are still down there. Offerings at riverside shrines go to them. The naga guards the temple stairs, as the yák guards the door.
